Pass a National PKD Awareness Week Resolution in the U.S. Senate

Current Status

The PKD Foundation has made a formal request to U.S. Sens. Herb Kohl (D-WI) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT) to co-sponsor a bipartisan Resolution later this year.

Resolutions were passed in the Senate in 2006 (S.Res. 564) and 2007 (S.Res. 232). The 2007 Resolution was sponsored by Herb Kohl (D-WI) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT).

Importance to PKD Patients

To help raise awareness and educate Congress and the public about PKD, the PKD Foundation will pursue a resolution in the U.S. Senate declaring a “PKD Awareness Week” for the week of Sept. 14-21, 2008, when the PKD Foundation holds its annual Walk for PKD. This fundraising/awareness event takes place in more than 60 cities across the nation. Such resolutions are used by Congress to call attention to issues that it deems important or noteworthy.

This resolution offers another way to draw national attention to PKD and give those who suffer from it a little more hope that their experiences will help spur more Congressional action toward finding a cure.

In addition, the Senate resolutions in 2006 and 2007 allowed many of the PKD Foundation’s advocates to successfully get similar resolutions and proclamations at the state and local level.
